You may have heard the headline this week: StumbleUpon Passes Facebook as Top Source of Social Media Traffic and you may still be asking yourself “what the hell is StumbleUpon and who picks that over Facebook?”
Well, to be honest, the headlines aren’t saying that StumbleUpon is more popular than Facebook. While Facebook enjoys a whopping 500 million users, StumbleUpon has a mere 13 million. But despite its relatively small user base, StumbleUpon creates more web traffic than any other social media platform (basically, more people are being referred to websites by StumbleUpon than by Facebook).
So, should you start using StumbleUpon? Beats me. I’ve never been an early adopter so what do I know. But if you’ve never used it before, It’s basically an online bookmarking service (you know, like the bookmarking feature at the top of your browser that you never use). So if you read something that you like, you can “stumble” it and find it easily in the future. But because this is the age of social media, when you “stumble” something, everyone else can find it as well.
